For the most part we are bound together by the love of our magnificent countryside and the pride we take in the authentic, rural character of our neighborhood.
Now we stand to lose all this. We are about to be divided. The fault line of this division runs between those who want wind turbines in our area and those who do not. Many (but not all) of those who have land on which turbines can be erected have signed agreements with Transfield. Notably, it is largely those who own land but who do not live on it or plan to retire in the near future that have agreed to host these huge machines.
The rental income created by the turbines will be lucrative for some in the medium term. However we believe that in the longer term the losses to Transfield’s lessors resulting from decreased property values, litigation & the decommissioning bill at contract’s end have the potential to destroy any gains made by landholders.
We are yet to see the first damages suit brought by a property owner adjoining land on which leases for wind turbines have been granted. Litigation could be launched by aggrieved residents against their wind farming neighbors for damage to property values, health or loss of amenity. In the case of a fire started by a turbine it is believed that the landlord- the party owning the land on which the turbines are placed may be liable.
Other communities where wind farms have been established that were once like ours can now be characterised by anger, division and regret.
A report conducted by David Mercer of the School of Social Science and Planning at RMIT University quoted one unhappy landholder at Codrington. He is currently earning more than $30,000 per annum from wind turbines on his land. He said-
“Wind farming has not worked for us and we now very
much regret the decision to proceed with the lease. The
wind farms have spoiled the coastline and spoiled the
view from the public beaches and other public areas.
The peaceful, natural views belong to everyone and they
have been damaged by this development”
